Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today dedicated 23 plaques honoring the memory of each of the police officers who died at the World Trade Center during the September 11th attack. Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly unveiled the plaques at the annual memorial service for those members of the NYPD who lose their lives in the line of duty during the previous year. All 23 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2001 died on September 11th. The families of the fallen heroes joined the Mayor and Commissioner at the ceremony at One Police Plaza.
"On September 11th, these 23 men and women who dedicated their entire lives to protecting their fellow New Yorkers made the ultimate sacrifice," Mayor Bloomberg said. "Each day, these members of New York's Finest courageously risked their lives to ensure our safety, and today we join to thank and honor them for their most significant contribution. We are forever indebted to these fallen heroes, and we will never forget what they did for all of us."
"Last year more members of the New York Police Department died in the line of duty than any other year in the history of the department," Commissioner Kelly said. "And they all died in the terrorist attack of Sept. 11. These 23 men and women gave everything they had to save hundreds, perhaps thousands, of lives during that horrible assault. And we will never forget them. Today we commemorate their valor, we honor their heroism, and we consecrate their names to this Memorial Wall, so that all who pass through here will remember their tremendous courage and integrity."
