MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG LAUNCHES NEW YORK CITY'S
FIRST ANNUAL TAKE OUR CHILDREN TO WORK DAY

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today launched New York City's first annual Take Our Children to Work Day in the spirit of the Ms. Foundation for Women. In its tenth year, the Foundation inspires young women and focuses the nation's attention on their ability to change the way the world works with the Take Our Daughters to Work Day public education campaign.

"It is a pleasure to celebrate such an important day here at City Hall," said Mayor Bloomberg. "These children today have the opportunity to get a glimpse of what public service is all about. Today's activities will help them see how government works and may very well inspire them to become the future leaders of our democracy."

"Since 1993, workplaces have given girls the chance to see women trading stocks, protecting communities, drafting legislation, and leading companies. These experiences help broaden girls' horizons as they start to envision themselves as anything from scientists to senators," said Marie C. Wilson, President of the Ms. Foundation for Women." In 2003, we will launch Take Our Daughters & Sons To Work Day to initiate a national discussion about the competing challenges of work and family and the inequalities that women and men face in the workplace."

This day allows these children to be exposed to the wide diversity of individuals who work each day to improve the quality of life for all people in this City. The children followed a schedule of events that included guided tours of City Hall, an Education forum with Deputy Mayor for Policy Dennis Walcott, and a sit-down meeting with the Mayor and his daughter Emma Bloomberg. The children who participated in Take Our Children to Work Day received gift bags and certificates to commemorate their visit to City Hall.

The New York City Commission on the Status of Women sponsors Take Our Children to Work Day for both young boys and girls to learn about opportunities in public service.
