MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG PARTICIPATES IN BLOOD DRIVE
AND ENCOURAGES ALL ELIGIBLE TO DONATE BLOOD

Need for Blood Donors Remains High in April

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today donated blood through the New York City Employee Blood Program and encouraged all eligible New Yorkers to donate blood. April 14-21 is National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week, which marks increased awareness of the need for organ and tissue donors as well as the need for life-saving blood donors to support transplant surgeries and medical care needs. The New York Blood Center reports that nearly 2,000 blood donations are needed daily for patients in local hospitals.

"By donating one pint of blood, you may be able to help several people," said Mayor Bloomberg. "I encourage all New Yorkers who are able to donate blood to participate in this potentially life-saving effort."

"Donations typically drop as the warm weather begins, creating a real health care crisis for our community," said Dr. Robert Jones, President and CEO of New York Blood Center. "We urge all those eligible to exhibit some of the same humanity we saw after the tragic events of last September and consider donating blood throughout the summer and the year."

The New York City Employee Blood Program aids the City's efforts to provide a safe and adequate blood supply. City employees are encouraged to participate in the program through their agencies which offer donation sites at the workplace.

All blood donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. They must also be in good general health. Potential donors undergo a free mini medical exam checking their pulse, blood pressure, temperature and iron count. Donors may call the New York Blood Center at 1-800-933-2566 to arrange a donation appointment or to learn more about donation locations. Information can also be obtained on the New York Blood Center's website at www.nybloodcenter.org.
