MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG UNVEILS "LEW RUDIN WAY"

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was joined by City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, Rachel Rudin and members of the Rudin family to dedicate "Lew Rudin Way" on 52nd Street and Park Avenue. The new street will run in front of the Rudin Management headquarters, which was founded by Lew's father, Sam, in 1924.

"Lew was a great New Yorker," said Mayor Bloomberg. "He was a businessman, a builder, a philanthropist and an advocate for the City he helped build and loved. As New Yorkers we should all be inspired by the life Lew led and the legacy he left."

"I am proud to have sponsored the Local Law that named a street after Lew," said former Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone. "Lew was a dear friend and a great leader for our City. In New York's darkest hour, Lew stepped up and made a commitment to our City that we must never forget."

"Often referred to as 'Mr. New York,' Lew Rudin exemplified both the grandiosity and generosity of the City he loved," said Council Speaker Gifford Miller. "He was deeply committed to New York, and to that we owe him our deepest gratitude. Today's street naming gives us the opportunity -- in a small but significant way -- to give something back to a man who made such remarkable contributions to our great City."

Lew Rudin and his brother, Jack, followed their parents into the family business of real estate after World War II. In 1950, they developed their first office property on Madison Avenue. Today, the Rudin Company's stamp on the City can be seen in the 22 residential and 14 commercial buildings constructed and owned by the family, and managed by the Rudin Management Company. In 1971, Lew started the Association for a Better New York (ABNY), a consortium of New York business and political leaders which addresses problems and issues affecting the overall economic health of the City. ABNY played a pivotal role in assisting New York City through the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. To this day it remains one of New York's foremost good government groups and a respected voice on civic and political affairs.

Lew Rudin was a founder of the New York City Marathon and took a leadership role in the campaign to bring the Olympics to New York City in 2012. He was a graduate of New York University and was married to Rachel Rudin. He had two children and four grandchildren.
