MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG SIGNS BILL ALLOWING
NEWSSTANDS TO INCREASE PRICES ON NON-PRINT MATERIALS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 28, sponsored by Council Member Reed. This bill would increase the price that newsstands may charge for non-print materials, such as film and batteries, from $2.00 to $5.00. The legislation would also permit newsstands to sell pre-paid telecommunication and transit cards.

Newsstands were last permitted to raise the price for non-print materials in 1979. By modestly increasing the maximum price newsstands may charge for these items, the legislation will allow newsstand owners to charge prices commensurate with today's business costs. Additionally, because the bill will expand the variety of items that newsstand owners may sell, it will permit these small businesses to offer consumers a wider selection of products.

Newsstands are an important part of the City's streetscape and small business life. This legislation will help newsstands remain competitive and continue to grow, benefiting the City's economy.

I will now turn to the bill's sponsor and to any other elected officials wishing to speak on this matter.

I will now turn to the general audience.

There being no one else wishing to speak and for the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
