MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG APPOINTS
MARJORIE TIVEN AND EMMA BLOOMBERG

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the appointment of Marjorie Bloomberg Tiven, the Mayor's sister, as the Commissioner for the United Nations Consular Corps and Protocol and Emma Bloomberg, the Mayor's daughter, as a Mayoral Program Coordinator, assisting Senior Advisor Vincent La Padula.

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome two of the most capable, intelligent, hard working and resourceful people into City Government," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Marjorie and Emma will serve New York with distinction and elegance and I look forward to working with them in service to our great City."

The duties of the Commissioner include promoting the role of the City of New York as the headquarters of the United Nations and serving as the principal liaison between the diplomatic community and the City. Additionally, the Commission assists UN members in accessing services available in the City, especially education, hospitals and housing; and working with voluntary neighborhood and community organizations on matters related to the United Nations and the Consular Corps.

"The Secretary-General was very pleased to learn that Ms. Marjorie Tiven will be serving as New York City Commissioner for the United Nations and Consular Corps," said Manoel Dealmeida, spokesman for Secretary-general Kofi Annan. He looks forward to a close and constructive relationship with the Commissioner and her team in tackling many issues of mutual interest and concern. And he welcomes the warm expressions of support from Mayor Bloomberg as the United Nations and its host city open a new chapter in their long history together."

Tiven was Director of Training at Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College. She was employed by The National Council on the Aging and The National Association of State Units on Aging. She wrote a year 2001 report on the lack of health insurance among citizens of New York State and New York City for the Alliance for Health Reform. Tiven left her job at Brookdale Center to assist her brother on his Mayoral Campaign. She is a graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work and Antioch College. She is the mother of three grown children.

Emma Bloomberg will serve as a Mayoral Program Coordinator assisting Senior Advisor Vincent La Padula. Bloomberg's duties will include research, document correspondence and editing and she will help implement Mayoral initiatives. She is a graduate of Princeton University and worked on her father's campaign editing campaign literature, scheduling surrogate speakers and organizing the interview process for all applicants to the new administration.

Both Tiven and Bloomberg will serve as volunteers and receive no salary or benefits. Both appointments were granted waivers by the City's Conflict of Interest Board (Cases 2002-015 and 2002-014 respectively).
