MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG APPOINTS NAT LEVENTHAL AS CHAIRMAN OF THE MAYOR'S COMMITTEE ON APPOINTMENTS

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced today the appointment of Nathan Leventhal as Chairman of the Mayor's Committee on Appointments. Leventhal is currently completing his assignment as Chairman of the Mayor's Transition Committee and will serve in his new capacity without compensation. Chief of Staff Peter Madonia will oversee the rest of the transition.

"Nat Leventhal has been the confidante of no fewer than four Mayors," said Mayor Bloomberg. "He has a prodigious knowledge of City government and a keen insight into the works of these critical boards and commissions. His superb work as Transition Chairman has confirmed my view that I would like to have him stay on as a key member of my Administration."

Established in 1986 by Executive Order, the Mayor's Committee on Appointments submits recommendations to the Mayor. From those recommendations, the Mayor appoints members of boards and commissions subject to confirmation by the City Council, as well as the Mayor's positions on the Campaign Finance Board (other than the Chair) and such boards and commissions, as the Mayor may deem advisable. The Chairman and other members of the Committee serve without compensation.

In addition to his work in City government, Leventhal served for seventeen years as President of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, stepping down from that position in December 2000. He also served as Chairman of Citizens Union, one of New York City's original advocacy groups from 1994 to 1997. Leventhal served in the offices of Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy, and for two years was Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, D.C. From 1974 to 1978, Leventhal was an attorney in the law offices of Poletti Freidin Prashker Feldman and Gartner in New York City.

Among other honors, Mr. Leventhal has been named Outstanding Public Administrator by the American Society for Public Administration, Distinguished Alumnus of Queens College, the Award for High Service to the City of New York presented by the Citizens Budget Commission, and Columbia University's Medal of Excellence. Leventhal is a graduate of Queens College and received his JD from Columbia Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Columbia Law Review.
