Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen at a graduation ceremony for 246 Probationary Firefighters. The new Firefighters - or "Probys," as they are often called - have successfully completed a rigorous 13-week training program that has prepared them for the many challenges they will face in their new careers. Six of the probationary firefighters in this class were lost in the attack on the World Trade Center and received diplomas in absentia.
"On behalf of our City, I want to congratulate and thank these brave individuals for taking on the career as a firefighter," Mayor Giuliani said. "Each graduate has demonstrated an enormous sense of duty by completing their training and being willing to face the rigorous challenges of being a firefighter. Particularly in light of the September 11th tragedy, the sacrifice and courage of these graduates should be commended because they are helping to protect the lives of all New Yorkers."
Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen said, "The probationary firefighters here today represent the future of this Department. Everyone here is personally devastated by the horrific events of September 11th. We have lost so many members and friends in what can only be described as an unimaginable tragedy. We will overcome this and we will persevere. With your determination and conviction we will rebuild this department on the memories and heroism of our fallen brothers, and continue to thrive as the greatest fire department in the world."
During the ceremony reference was made to six chairs that sat empty among
the graduates, each one covered in purple and black mourning drapes. The chairs
were left in place to honor the memory of six probationary firefighters who
are among the 343 Fire Department members lost as a result of the September
11th attack on the World Trade Center. Receiving their diplomas in absentia
were Firefighters Richard D. Allen, Calixto Anaya, Jr., Andrew C. Brunn, Michael
Cammarata, Micheal D'Auria and Anthony Rodriguez.
