MAYOR GIULIANI AND COMMISSIONER PODZIBA ANNOUNCE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba today announced that New York City will host the sixth annual Mayor's Cup Softball Tournament. Qualifying rounds in each borough commence on Saturday, September 8th and the finals will be held on Central Park's Great Lawn on September 15th (rain date Sept. 16th). Proceeds from this citywide tournament will benefit the City Parks Foundation.

"The Mayor's Cup Softball Tournament is an exciting opportunity for New Yorkers to test their playing skills against the best softball players throughout our city," Mayor Giuliani said. "The competition in all divisions will be intense and competitive; and the borough champions will have the honor of playing for the Mayor's Cup on the recently renovated fields of Central Park's Great Lawn."

Commissioner Podziba said, "This is an exciting annual tournament that all New Yorkers can enjoy. It showcases our city's finest softball players, and gives sports fans an opportunity to see their fellow New Yorkers participate in high caliber softball."

"For the sixth consecutive year we will make our Mayor and city proud by organizing a Mayor's Cup tournament that will feature great performances, fine sportsmanship and fan enthusiasm," said Al Morales, President, United Athletic Association.
