MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL RENAMING SECTION OF BAY 41ST STREET IN BROOKLYN, "EUGENE R. ROMANO LANE"

Remarks by Mayor Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me is Introductory Number 691, sponsored by Council Members Lasher, Nelson and Abel. The bill would add the name "Eugene R. Romano Lane" to Bay 41st Street, from Leif Ericson Drive to the shoreline, in Brooklyn.

Eugene Romano Jr. was born on January 18, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts. When he was five years old, Eugene's family moved to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn. He went on to serve our nation in Europe during World War II, and then returned to Brooklyn to start his own real estate brokerage business.

Eugene Romano, however, is best remembered as the owner of the Nellie Bly Amusement Park. He opened Nellie Bly in 1967 in an area just off the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. Always civic-minded, Eugene would often open the park at no cost to underprivileged children and to youth groups.

Unfortunately, Eugene Romano passed away on October 6, 1999.

Therefore, in view of his dedication to his community and his long-time ownership of Nellie Bly Amusement Park, a Brooklyn institution, I am pleased to rename Bay 41st Street, from Leif Ericson Drive to the shoreline, "Eugene R. Romano Lane."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
