MAYOR GIULIANI WELCOMES "UPTOWN GOES DOWNTOWN"
CEREMONY TO CITY HALL

Proclaims "Uptown Goes Downtown Day" and Honors Recipients
of Harlem Week Scholarship Awards

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed "Uptown Goes Downtown Day" and honored recipients of the 2001 Harlem Week Scholarship Awards. The Mayor was joined at the City Hall ceremony by Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington, State Senator David A. Paterson, Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce Chairman Lloyd Williams, and Members of the Boards of Harlem Week and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

"The theme of this year's Harlem Week celebrates the transformation and history of one New York's most famous neighborhoods," Mayor Giuliani said. "The signs of the new Harlem Renaissance are clear -- new businesses have sprung up and visitors from all over the world are rediscovering the cultural vitality of this great American neighborhood.

"I want to congratulate all of this year's Harlem Week scholarship awardees and urge you to continue to take pride in your neighborhood and your City," the Mayor continued.

The annual Harlem Week Festival was first celebrated 27 years ago by the Uptown Chamber of Commerce, now the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, as part of an effort to revitalize the Harlem community. This year's celebration runs from August 1-19 and includes the inaugural induction of members into the National Black Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame and Museum and the 4th annual Harlem Jazz and Music Festival.

Harlem Week Scholarships are awarded annually by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce. Over the past 21 years, approximately 1,000 scholarships, totaling over $1 million, have been awarded to New York City high school seniors and community based educational and cultural organizations. This year 16 scholarships were awarded to young New Yorkers.
