The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 906, sponsored by Council Member Michels. This legislation will help protect residents of nursing homes from unreasonable noise and disruptions.
Currently, the City's Noise Code prohibits people from causing unreasonably loud noise through the use of a device, such as a radio or jackhammer, on streets adjacent to courts, hospitals, and schools. This bill would grant nursing homes the same noise protection. Anyone found guilty of causing unreasonable noise around a nursing home will now have to pay a civil penalty of between $220 and $2,625 per violation.
Nursing homes are intended to be secure, peaceful places for the elderly and the sick. It is appropriate for the City to keep the areas around nursing homes free from unreasonable disruption. By adding nursing homes to the list of facilities protected in the Noise Code, we will help ensure that our elderly and infirm citizens are spared needless and unreasonable disturbances.
For the reasons previously
stated, I will now sign the bill.
