MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES THE KICKOFF OF "YOUTHWEEK 2001"

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the kickoff of "Youthweek 2001," a series of events that will give youth in New York City a chance to explore the diverse services and activities the City has to offer. The announcement preceded a sampling of Youthweek 2001 activities in City Hall Park.

The Mayor was joined by Jerry Cammarata, Commissioner of the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and Abby Modell, the wife of the late Michael Modell, who was recognized at the ceremony for his contributions to young people.

Mayor Giuliani said, "Youthweek 2001 provides young people with an opportunity to rediscover their City. It gives them something new and different to do over the summer, whether it's learning how to rock climb in Central Park, encountering the sea life in Pelham Bay, or exploring options for after high school at a college fair. Youthweek 2001 shows our commitment to making our City a great place for our children and teenagers, a place where they can learn and play and grow in an atmosphere of safety, diversity and cultural richness."

Commissioner Cammarata said, "Youthweek 2001 will have something to spark the imagination of each and every participant. This unique event will be more than playing sports and going to museums-it will be a chance for children and teens to learn something new while having fun."

Also during the ceremony at City Hall, the late Michael S. Modell was posthumously awarded for his outstanding contributions to the youth of New York City. The award, named for Mr. Modell, was accepted by his widow, Abby Modell.

Youthweek 2001 runs from July 9th through the 14th, and activities will be held throughout the five boroughs. They include environmental field trips, sporting events, and neighborhood cleanups.
