Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that New York City will host the 21st annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games from July 1 to July 5. It is the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the United States, featuring hundreds of athletes in a number of sporting events, including basketball, softball, rugby, bowling, weightlifting and track & field.
"These veterans served their country with honor and courage in our nation's armed forces," said Mayor Giuliani. "They inspired us with their service and they continue to inspire us today. By overcoming disabilities to compete in world-class sporting events, these veterans show that nothing can hold back the human spirit. I encourage all New Yorkers to watch the Games and cheer for these remarkable athletes."
Maryannn Musumeci, Director of the Bronx VA Medical Center, said, "New York City has always supported its veterans, and the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs worked diligently to bring these Games here. These athletes represent the very best of their community, and we are thrilled to be the co-hosts for this wonderful event."
More than 600 wheelchair athletes from across the United States and Puerto Rico will participate in this year's National Veterans Wheelchair Games, a multi-event sports and rehabilitation program for military service veterans who have suffered spinal cord injuries, amputations, or certain neurological problems. The sponsors of this event are committed to improving the quality of life for veterans with disabilities and to fostering better health through competitive sports.
Athletic events will
take place at venues throughout the City, including Central Park, Chelsea
Piers, Riverside State Park and Randall's Island. The Games are co-sponsored
by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
This year's event hosts are the Bronx VA Medical Center and the Eastern Paralyzed
Veterans Association (EPVA).
