The next two bills before me today, Introductory Numbers 886 and 888, would authorize the creation of two new Business Improvement Districts, known as BIDs. Bids are organizations funded by local businesses that assist participating merchants with security, sanitation and promotional efforts. It is my hope that the new Bids we establish today will help local businesses to thrive and grow, continuing the City's overall economic expansion.
Introductory Number 886, sponsored at my request by Council Members Eisland and Carrion, will establish the Kingsbridge Business Improvement District in the Bronx. The new BID will cover the area on Broadway between West 230th and West 236th Streets as well as West 231st Street between the Major Deegan Expressway and Corlear Avenue. The covered area is among the oldest and busiest commercial districts in the borough, and the new BID will assist merchants with beautification efforts, security, marketing and promotional work.
Introductory Number 888, sponsored at my request by Council Member Golden, would establish the 86th Street Bay Ridge Business Improvement District in Brooklyn. The 86th Street BID will operate in one of the borough's premier shopping districts, covering all of 86th Street between Fort Hamilton Parkway and 4th Avenue, as well as parts of 85th, 87th and 88th Streets. Like its Kingsbridge counterpart, the 86th Street BID will help its 92 participants to keep the area a clean, safe and attractive commercial environment.
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
