Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced contingency plans for the transit strike by the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) which is affecting bus service between the Bronx and Manhattan provided by Liberty Lines Express and Liberty Lines Transit.

"This plan outlines the City efforts to make certain that the City continues to operate normally and ensures that City residents and businesses are not unduly affected by this unfortunate event," said Mayor Giuliani.

Since much of the transit system in the Bronx will remain intact, the City's plan directs affected customers to alternative existing transportation modes. These alternatives will include:

• Using New York City Transit bus and rail service;
  
• Walking to the nearest subway or Metro--North station;
  
• Using alternative modes such as licensed car services, carpools and bicycles;
  
• Being driven to nearby Metro--North stations.
  
• Using the Park--And--Ride lot at Van Cortlandt and Pelham Bay Park.

The bus company strike will not affect MTA operations. For information about MTA bus and rail services, customers can call the following numbers:

Displaced express bus customers will be encouraged to use subway or railroad. Driving to Manhattan will be discouraged. In order to encourage commuters to avoid driving into Manhattan, Park & Ride access at Van Cortlandt and Pelham Bay Park will be publicized.

The New York City Department of Transportation's hotline, 212-CALLDOT and web site www.nyc.gov/calldot will be updated with information concerning alternative methods of transportation and altered traffic regulations should a strike occur.
