TRANSCRIPT OF MAYOR GIULIANI'S OPENING COMMENTS AT CITY HALL PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE PASSING OF MAYOR ABRAHAM D. BEAME

"Good afternoon. I called Abe Beame's son earlier and expressed to him the prayers, support, sympathy and condolences of the people of the City. I told him the City of New York would be at his family's disposal for any help or assistance that they need in dealing with the death of Abraham Beame. I'm sure all New Yorkers join me in expressing our appreciation to Abe Beame and to his family for many, many years of dedicated service to the people of the City of New York.

"It began with his working for the City in the late 1940s. He was the Budget Director of the City of New York, which is one of the most difficult jobs in the City, and he was the Comptroller of the City of New York. He was the Mayor of the City of New York during one of its most difficult periods and the City got through it and the City got stronger as a result of it and he never lost confidence and faith in the City of New York. During that period of time I lived part of my life in New York City and part of my life in Washington so I remember very, very well the City's struggles during that period.

"Abe Beame was a very strong advocate for the City of New York, the City that he loved. He was born in London and he became a New Yorker. He's an example of someone who came to this City, grew to love it, served it and all of us are in his debt and his family's and the City will do anything it can to help his family."
