MAYOR GIULIANI'S STATEMENT ON STATE EDUCATION FUNDING
"The court held that the State has historically given an unequal and unfair
amount of education aid to the City. Any proposal to remedy this inequity by requiring
the City to give more money would only make this inequity worse, and turn Judge
DeGrasse's decision on its head -- especially since New York State's four other
large cities receive 63% of their education funding from the State, while New
York City still receives only 44% of its education funding from the State.
What's more, the claim that the City has not increased its commitment to the
school system in recent years is just not true. In fact, under my Administration,
New York City has not only increased its contribution to the Board of Education's
budget, it has done so at levels higher than the State's increases. Under my
Administration, the City has dramatically increased its share of education funding
by $1.6 billion, or 42%. By contrast, the Pataki Administration's increases
to City education funding have been less dramatic -- $1.4 billion, or 37%."
