STATEMENT OF MAYOR GIULIANI ON THE PASSING OF MARTY GLICKMAN
"Marty Glickman's accomplishments on the field and off will long live in
the hearts and minds of sports fans all over. This Brooklynite began setting track
records at Brooklyn's James Madison High School and made it all the way to the
1936 Olympics in Germany only to be benched by anti-Semitism. As a broadcaster,
Marty has called them all, from New York City marble shooting championships to
NFL championships, from NBA All-Star games to the high school Game-of the-Week,
from six day bike racing to the Spartakiade in Moscow. Sports fans will never
forget his 23 years with the Giants, 20 years with the Knickerbockers, 11 years
with the Jets, 22 years of baseball Warm-up-Time and Sports Extra, 16 years at
Yonkers Raceway, 13 years of Today's Baseball, 15 years of Paramount newsreels
and 21 years of college basketball. I grew up listening to Marty Glickman and
will always remember his distinct style, his way with words and his courage. Along
with all New Yorkers, I extend my prayers and sympathy to his family."
