Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today celebrated Christmas Eve with a visit to Hale House, the nation's oldest and best-known program that cares for babies born addicted to drugs or alcohol, or infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. More than 3,000 children have found sanctuary at Hale House during the past 30 years. Joining the Mayor was Dr. Lorraine Hale, co-founder of Hale House with her mother, Clara Hale.
"I want to thank Dr. Lorraine Hale and Clara "Mother" Hale for their work that began in 1969 and continues today to make a difference in the lives of so many children, " said Mayor Giuliani. "Their efforts and the work of Hale House remind us of the values we cherish during the holidays - such as good will, spirituality, and charity - and sets a wonderful example for all New Yorkers."
During his visit, the Mayor listened to children sing Christmas carols and distributed Christmas gifts. The Mayor also read to the children from the Christmas classic 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, which was written by New York City native Clement Moore on December 23, 1822.
Clara "Mother" Hale founded Hale House thirty years ago in Harlem.
Throughout her extraordinary life, Clara Hale was universally praised for her
efforts to care for babies affected by drugs and illness, and for giving them
a happy, healthy start in life.
