"The Subway Series - The Yankees, The Mets and a Season to Remember"
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today unveiled the latest addition to the library of books written on New York City's sports history: The Subway Series - The Yankees, The Mets and a Season to Remember, published by The Sporting News. The foreword of the 152-page book was written by the Mayor.
The Mayor was joined by New York City Sports Commissioner Ken Podziba and Sporting News Senior Vice-President and Publisher Fran Farrell.
"The title of 'Best Sports City in America' bestowed upon New York last
year by The Sporting News was only reinforced this October when, for
the first time since 1956, baseball fans everywhere were treated to the excitement
of a glorious baseball phenomena: The Subway Series," said Mayor Giuliani.
"I am very excited to be here today with The Sporting News to unveil
a very special book commemorating the 2000 Subway Series."
"I'm particularly excited because The Sporting News asked me to
write the foreword to the book. This gave me the chance to share the heritage
of the Subway Series, which captured the attention of our entire City while
I was growing up, with many people who could only read about it in the history
books. This year's Subway Series introduced a new generation of baseball fans
to all the excitement of having crosstown rivals meet on the field and play
for bragging rights in the greatest city in the world," continued Mayor
Giuliani.
"This book brilliantly captures the excitement, energy and spirit of the 2000 baseball season and historic Subway Series in New York City - the undisputed Baseball Capital of the World," said Commissioner Podziba.
"The choice for a foreword was obvious to us," said Mr. Farrell. "Mayor Giuliani is an unabashed baseball fan with genuine knowledge about the magic of Subway Series past, and now, present. We were honored that he consented to be a contributor."
The Subway Series - The Yankees, The Mets, and A Season to Remember will celebrate the road to the World Series for the two teams, their regular-season ups and downs, their Division Series and Championship Series victories, and, finally, their showdown in the World Series, right to the final out in Game Five.
The Sporting News, established in 1886, is the nation's oldest sports weekly.
