MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING BROOKLYN STREET
AFTER CHARLES E. INNISS

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 801, sponsored by Council Members Robinson, Berman and Clarke, would add the name "Charles E. Inniss Avenue" to Brooklyn Avenue, between Saint Marks Avenue and Park Place, in Brooklyn.

Charles Evans Inniss was born in New York City on June 13, 1935. He graduated from NYU with a Bachelor of Science degree and later went on to receive a Masters in Public Administration. During his lifetime, Charles Inniss served the City in a variety of ways. He was the Director of Public Information and Development at the Brooklyn Public Library; he served as the Administrator of Brooklyn Model Cities as well as the Director of Area Development for the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.

Notwithstanding Mr. Inniss's noteworthy accomplishments in the other areas of his life, his greatest achievements came in his work with young people. As a co-founder of Career Opportunities for Brooklyn Youth Incorporated, and as a trustee of the City University of New York, Mr. Inniss's efforts were instrumental in assisting hundreds of young people obtain jobs and college scholarships. Not surprisingly, since Mr. Inniss's death on January 30, 1997, his contributions have been recognized by many in his Brooklyn community. For example, the Franciscans renamed their Brooklyn homeless facility for men "The Charles E. Inniss St. Joseph Franciscan House."

Therefore, in view of his commitment to his community and his service to the City, it is fitting that Brooklyn Avenue, between St. Marks Avenue and Park Place, be named "Charles E. Inniss Avenue."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
