MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING BROOKLYN STREET
AFTER LOUIS GRAZIUSO, SR.

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 653, sponsored by Council Members Oddo and Abel, would add the name "Louis Graziuso, Sr. Drive" to Rutherford Place, between 17th Avenue and 18th Avenue, in Brooklyn.

Louis Graziuso was born in Brooklyn on September 29, 1914. He attended Public School 22 and New Utrecht High School, both in Brooklyn.

In 1950, Mr. Graziuso founded Alm Plumbing. Over the next forty-five years, he built a reputation as a caring merchant, who consistently served the needs of those in his community.

Mr. Graziuso was especially known for his generosity to the less fortunate. He had a particular willingness to help troubled young people. He often left food and gifts on the doorsteps of needy families. He gave young people, many of whom needed guidance in their lives, jobs in his store and he even taught them his trade. Today, some of those once-troubled teenagers are plumbers and tradesmen. Their success is part of the legacy of Louis Graziuso.

Unfortunately, Mr. Graziuso died on December 22, 1995.

Therefore, based on his many years of dedicated service to his community, it is fitting that Rutherford Place, between 17th Avenue and 18th Avenue, be named "Louis Graziuso, Sr. Drive."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
