MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING BRONX STREET "WAY OF THE FINEST"

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 644, sponsored by Council Members Espada and Provenzano, would add the name "Way of the Finest" to the site of the 42nd Precinct on Washington Avenue, between East 159th Street and East 161st Street, in the Bronx.

This bill will honor all police officers, past, present and future, who have given, or will give their lives in the line of duty during service with the 42nd Precinct. The names of slain officers and the dates of their deaths will be placed, via street name riders, underneath the street signs as memorials to those fallen heroes. While this legislation seeks to recognize fallen officers from the 42nd Precinct, we should all remember the dedication and self-sacrifice that police officers throughout this City have demonstrated on behalf of us all.

Two officers from the 42nd Precinct, Detective Philip A. Lamonica and Police Officer George Mead, have been killed in the line of duty. Detective Lamonica was killed in a gun battle with fugitive convicts in September of 1952, and Police Officer Mead was killed in October of 1973 while trying to prevent a robbery.

Therefore, in honor of the officers of the 42nd Precinct, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our City, it is fitting that Washington Avenue, between East 159th Street and East 161st Street, be named "Way of the Finest."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
