MAYOR GIULIANI AND SANITATION COMMISSIONER FARRELL
OFFICIATE AT PROMOTION, SWEARING-IN AND RECOGNITION CEREMONY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sanitation Commissioner Kevin P. Farrell officiated today at a ceremony where over 350 Sanitation employees were graduated, promoted to higher ranks, or recognized for outstanding work performance and acts of heroism.

"This past Monday, New Yorkers got a vivid example of the dedication and professionalism of the Department of Sanitation, when an estimated 46.7 tons of paper from the tickertape parade was cleaned up in a matter of hours," said Mayor Giuliani. "It doesn't take a tickertape parade to show New Yorkers how their City relies on your work. The cleanliness of our streets is one of the most immediate indicators of the state of our City. When streets are clean, it sends an unmistakable message that New York is a City that works. It says that we are a City that values a high quality of life, and a City that strives toward setting an example of what a civil society looks like."

"The graduates here today represent the future of this fine agency," said Commissioner Farrell. "Our other honorees reflect the breadth of this Department's commitment to the residents of the City. Together, they ensure that New York continues to shine and sparkle like no other city."

Three classes of new Sanitation Workers totaling 302 were administered the oath of office. This completes a record number of Sanitation Worker hires - 1,500 new employees in the past 11 months, more than in any one-year period over the past 10 years. In addition, nine other General Superintendents were appointed to higher ranks.

Anthony DeSantis and Peter McKeon, who have 28 and 19 years of service respectively, were promoted to the executive position of three star chiefs. Forty seven uniformed and civilian employees, who were selected for the 2000 First and Second Employee Quarterly Awards, received a certificate and a distinguished Sanitation lapel pin for their exemplary work.

Monsignor Robert J. Thelen, who is the pastor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ozone Park, Queens, was installed as the new Department Chaplain. Msgr. Thelen's father retired from DSNY as a District Superintendent assigned to the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.
