MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING QUEENS STREET AFTER KEVIN MAHON

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 615, sponsored by Council Members Sabini, McCaffrey, Abel and Golden, would add the name "Kevin Mahon Avenue" to 38th Avenue, between 65th Street and 69th Street, in Queens.

Kevin Mahon was born on June 7, 1951 in Woodside, Queens. At an early age, Kevin became interested in community affairs. He organized a civic group, the Win-Wood Neighborhood Association. As part of Woodside's celebration of the nation's bicentennial, Win-Wood worked to upgrade and improve the Roosevelt Avenue corridor, Woodside's shopping district.

After graduating from Manhattan College in 1972, Mr. Mahon served his country in Vietnam as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

Later, Kevin founded Woodside On The Move, which brought economic, cultural, employment and housing programs to the entire community.

Unfortunately Kevin passed away on May 19, 1998.

Therefore, in view of his many years of service to the Woodside community, it is fitting that 38th Avenue, between 65th Street and 69th Street, be named "Kevin Mahon Avenue."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
