Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws
The first bill before me, Introductory Number 788, sponsored by Council Members Foster, Carrion and Marshall, would add the name "Edward A. Stevenson Boulevard" to Boston Road, between Third Avenue and East 174th Street, in the Bronx.
Edward A. Stevenson was born in New York City on January 21, 1935. Mr. Stevenson was a long-time and dedicated New York City employee, first with the Housing Development Association, and then with the Department of Environmental Protection. After 28 years of City service, he retired in 1990.
Mr. Stevenson was also extremely active in Bronx politics. He was a Democratic District leader and the co-founder of the not-for profit group Voters Organized to Educate and Register. Through Edward's efforts, this organization registered hundreds of Bronx residents to vote. In addition, he was a founder of the Bronx Shepherd's Restoration Group, an organization of 100 religious groups dedicated to rebuilding Bronx communities.
Mr. Stevenson was appointed a Commissioner of the New York City Board of Elections just two days before his untimely death on December 22, 1996.
Therefore, in view of his long and distinguished service to his community, it is fitting that Boston Road, between Third Avenue and East 174th Street, be named "Edward A. Stevenson Boulevard."
For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
