MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING MANHATTAN STREETS "DESIGNERS WAY" AND "DECORATORS WAY"

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bills before me are Introductory Numbers 796 and 797, which are sponsored by Council Members Moskowitz, Marshall and Abel. These bills would add the name "Designers Way" to East 58th Street between Second and Third Avenues, and the name "Decorators Way" to East 59th Street, between Second and Third Avenues, in Manhattan.

East 58th and 59th Streets form the core of the City's decoration and design industry. These blocks are filled with many independent decorator and design businesses. These decorator and design firms are an important component of the City's economy where thousands of people come to work and shop every day.

Therefore, in recognition of the unique status of this area as the design center of New York City, it is fitting that East 58th Street and East 59th Street be named "Designers Way" and "Decorators Way," respectively.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bills.
