MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL NAMING QUEENS STREET AFTER JOE AUSTIN

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 566, sponsored by Council Member Povman, would add the name "Joe Austin Way" to 84th Avenue, between 164th Street and 168th Street, in Queens.

Joe Austin was born on March 19, 1904. He attended P.S. 82Q and Jamaica High School. Baseball was Joe's passion. He played semi-pro ball and later went on to coach local children in Jamaica, Queens. During his lifetime, Joe coached and mentored hundreds of boys in his community, including former Governor Mario Cuomo. In honor of his dedication to young people and his skills as a baseball coach, the community named a playground after Mr. Austin 1983.

Unfortunately, Joe Austin died on September 8, 1998 at the age of 94.

Therefore, in recognition of a lifetime devoted to youth and community, it is fitting that 84th Avenue, between 164th Street and 168th Street, be named "Joe Austin Way."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
