MAYOR GIULIANI AND BOROUGH PRESIDENT MOLINARI CUT RIBBON ON NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN STATEN ISLAND

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Staten Island Borough President Guy V. Molinari today cut the ribbon to officially open P.S. 6, only the second completely new school to be built in Staten Island since 1981. The Mayor and the Borough President were joined by Howard Wilson, Chair of the New York City School Construction Authority, Christy Cugini, Superintendent of Community School District 31, and Carol Ildebrando, Principal of P.S. 6.

"I'm very pleased today to open P.S. 6," Mayor Giuliani said. "This new school-the result of a collaborative effort between my Administration, Borough President Molinari, and the City Council-represents an important step in creating the state-of-the-art space the City needs to educate students in the new century. Thanks to the good work of the School Construction Authority, P.S. 6 was completed on-budget, and ahead of time. This reflects a four-year trend of the SCA to finish all of its planned seats early or on time. But of course schools are much more than just seats and buildings. Schools exist to teach children, and we all look forward to this school teaching children for decades to come."

"P.S. 6 is a tribute to the dedicated support Mayor Giuliani has given to the people of Staten Island," Borough President Molinari said. "When I went to the Mayor and stated that Staten Island needed another school on the South Shore, Mayor Giuliani stepped up and secured the money to construct this state-of-the-art educational facility. We all owe the Mayor a debt of gratitude for this wonderful, modern school. Parents, teachers and community leaders alike have praised the caliber of excellence in the design of the school, and I commend the School Construction Authority for another fine job."

P.S. 6 is a K-5 elementary school with a capacity of 955 students. A nearly 200,00 square foot facility, P.S. 6 was financed entirely with money from the City Budget, independent of the Board of Education's' five year capital plan.
