MAYOR GIULIANI OPENS COWPARADE NEW YORK 2000 AUCTION

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani banged the opening gavel this evening to begin the bidding on the CowParade New York 2000 auction held at Cipriani 42nd Street. The Mayor opened the bidding on "Yeeow! Moow York Moo Bugged Out" Cow decorated by New York artist Naomi Campbell, the first of 75 cows auctioned. Proceeds from the auction benefit six City charities - The City Parks Foundation; God's Love We Deliver; Hale House; Citymeals-on-Wheels; New Yorkers for Children, and The Center for Arts Education.

"CowParade New York has been a wonderful success with hundreds of beautiful and whimsical cows delighting New Yorkers and visitors to our City this summer," said Mayor Giuliani. "However, not only has CowParade been a great display of the talent of New York artists, including fifty Cows designed by students and teachers from our public schools, CowParade New York Auction will provide important benefits to worthwhile City charities."

The first-ever public art event held in all five boroughs of New York City, CowParade 2000 featured 500 life-sized fiberglass cows, painted and decorated by area artists and students, in parks, plazas and other public spaces this summer. CowParade began in 1998 in Zurich, Switzerland and then was imported to Chicago in 1999.
