MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF JERILYN PERINE
AS COMMISSIONER OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING
PRESERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the appointment of Jerilyn Perine as the new Commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Ms. Perine has served as Acting Commissioner since July 13, 2000, when former Commissioner Richard T. Roberts left HPD for a position in the private sector. Her appointment is effective immediately.

"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jerilyn Perine as Commissioner of HPD," said Mayor Giuliani. "She is a veteran of New York City government and has held various positions involving economic development, planning and housing development. She is a proven leader whose solid administrative and management experience will help guide HPD as we seek to further meet the housing needs of all New Yorkers."

Prior to serving as Acting Commissioner, Commissioner Perine held the position of First Deputy Commissioner, where she authored the agency's strategic plan. This plan focuses on meeting the demand for new housing; encouraging private investment; breaking the cycle of residential abandonment; ending City ownership and management of distressed properties; and streamlining operations.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development," said Commissioner Perine. "As a result of Mayor Giuliani's policies, over the past six years nearly 12,000 families became home owners, many for the first time. I am grateful to Mayor Giuliani for this opportunity and look forward to further implementing the Mayor's public-private partnership initiatives, which will provide better housing opportunities for New Yorkers."

Prior to serving as First Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner Perine held the title of Deputy Commissioner at the Office of Planning and Policy, where she was responsible for developing and implementing new housing initiatives. Before this she served as Assistant Commissioner for Alternative Management Programs, where she was responsible for creating and implementing new programs that resulted in the privatization of City-owned buildings and prevented many distressed buildings from becoming City-owned.

Commissioner Perine received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the City College of New York and did graduate work at the Urban Planning Program of the New York University Graduate School of Public Administration from 1975-1978.

She is a member of the International Brownfield Exchange and has traveled and worked with housing and community development professionals in Germany and the United Kingdom.

She lives in Manhattan with her husband and two children. As Commissioner she will earn $150,500.
