MAYOR GIULIANI, FIRE COMMISSIONER VON ESSEN, DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION COMMISSIONER HOLDEN DEDICATE NEW EMS FACILITY IN HARLEM

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen and Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Kenneth Holden in dedicating the new station for Emergency Medical Service 16 in Harlem. The new structure, located at West 136th Street and Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Boulevard, replaces the outmoded building near Harlem Hospital.

"This building represents the cutting edge of EMS station technology and, with its construction, New York remains a leader among cities in providing forward-looking, state-of-the-art medical treatment to its residents," said Mayor Giuliani. "This state-of-the art EMS was completed in one year, on budget, and is a model for the thirty new EMS stations that are being built in neighborhoods across the City as part of our initiative to reduce 911 response time. "

"By supporting the construction and the opening of this new Emergency Medical Service Station, Mayor Giuliani has once again demonstrated his commitment to the Fire Department and the communities that we serve," said Commissioner Von Essen. "With this new state-of-the-art facility we will be able to continue effectively and efficiently to serve the citizens of this community for many years to come."

"Mayor Giuliani created the Department of Design and Construction to deliver the City's capital construction projects in a safe, expeditious and cost-effective manner," said Commissioner Holden. "Our team did an outstanding job. I am proud this facility has been placed into service to the community a year after construction started."

The new station serves the Harlem, Manhattanville, Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights communities. Construction was completed a year after the groundbreaking. The 6,000 square foot facility was built at a cost of about $2.7 million. A total of 70 Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics and supervisory personnel staff the facility.

In addition to being able to fuel and re-stock the ambulances, the station features an antibacterial cleansing area for the interior of ambulances and a specially built exhaust system, which prevents the build-up of carbon monoxide from running engines.
