MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES
BRONX STREET AFTER CARLOS D. RAMIREZ

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 662, sponsored by Council Members Rivera, Linares, Foster and McCaffrey, would add the name Avenida Carlos D. Ramirez to that portion of East Fordham Road that is directly opposite, and parallel to, the southern border of John F. Bryan Park. The park is located at the intersection of Fordham Road and East Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx.

Carlos D. Ramirez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on August 19, 1946. His family care to New York City when Carlos was two years old and settled in Corona, Queens. In 1981, after receiving his degree in accounting, Mr. Ramirez became comptroller of El Diario/La Prensa. In 1984 he was named President and Publisher, a position he held until his death.

As publisher, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the country's oldest Spanish language newspaper. In 1989, Mr. Ramirez formed a partnership to purchase the paper, bringing Latino ownership to the Spanish daily. The partnership later became part of a new company, Latin Communications Group (LCG). Mr. Ramirez served on the board of LCG and was the president of the print division.

Carlos Ramirez was very active in the community and served on a number of boards, including the board of El Museo del Barrio and the Governor's Task Force on the Elderly. Unfortunately, Carlos D. Ramirez died on July 11, 1999.

Therefore, in commemoration of his contribution to the Latino community and the communications industry, it is fitting that this area of Fordham Road be named after Avenida Carlos D. Ramirez.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
