MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES
BROOKLYN STREET "BREWER'S ROW"

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The first bill before me, Introductory Number 749, sponsored by Council Members Fisher, DiBrienza and O'Donovan, would add the name Brewers Row to North 11th Street, between Berry Street and Wythe Avenue, in Brooklyn.

The Borough of Brooklyn has a long history as a center of the brewing industry. In 1898, Brooklyn was home to 48 breweries, most of them German-style lager breweries located in Williamsburg and Bushwick. However, these breweries could not compete in the post-Prohibition era of national brand brewing and were forced to close down their operations.

In June of 1996, Brooklyn Brewery opened for business on North 11th Street, becoming the first commercial brewery in Brooklyn in over 20 years. Today, Brooklyn Brewery distributes its products from Massachusetts to Virginia.

Therefore, in honor of the return of the brewing industry to Brooklyn, it is fitting that North 11th Street, between Berry Street and Wythe Avenue, be named Brewers Row.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
