MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES INITIAL HEALTH*STAT ROLL-OUT
WILL CONCENTRATE ON CENTRAL BROOKLYN

Mayor's Town Hall Meeting On July 20th in Bedford-Stuyvesant to Address Health*STAT and Health Care Issues

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that the Health*STAT program will begin conducting concentrated outreach and enrollment initiatives in three Central Brooklyn neighborhoods: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and Brownsville.

Announced by the Mayor on June 16th, 2000, Health*STAT is a comprehensive Citywide initiative to provide uninsured New Yorkers with health insurance. Health*STAT mobilizes all City agencies to identify uninsured New Yorkers, and-through a partnership with non-profit organizations-assists them in enrolling in health insurance programs. The initial focus of Health*STAT is to provide the City's uninsured children with health insurance.

"Expanding access to health insurance is one of the most important ways the City can improve the lives of New Yorkers," Mayor Giuliani said. "Approximately 1.5 million low-income New Yorkers lack health care coverage. Of those, at least 900,000-of whom one quarter are children, and two-thirds are working-are likely eligible for existing federal and state health care plans. Our initial analysis has found that a high concentration of uninsured New Yorkers, and particularly children, live in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and Brownsville. That's why we're concentrating our early efforts in those areas."

Beginning July 17th and continuing throughout the summer, City agencies will be mobilized in this effort to educate and enroll residents in public health insurance programs. Coordinated by the Mayor's Office of Health Insurance Access, outreach to uninsured residents will be conducted through community events held by the New York City Housing Authority, the Board of Education, the Parks Department, the Police Department, as well as other City agencies.

Thousands of flyers and posters will advertise the effort, and printed information will be available at 135 sites in the neighborhoods, including police precincts, day care centers, health clinics, schools, recreational centers, as well as other places frequented by community members. Local businesses, churches, and community groups will also promote this initiative.

Residents are especially encouraged to visit an enrollment site for more information or to enroll in a health insurance program. Ten enrollment sites will be conveniently located throughout the three neighborhoods, with personnel available to provide information and assist with enrollment in health plans. The sites, including times in which personnel will be available, are as follows:
