MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES
BROOKLYN STREET AFTER POLICE OFFICER HARRY RYMAN

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The first bill before me, Introductory Number 737, sponsored by Council Members Lasher and Golden, would name West 8th Street, between Neptune and Surf Avenues in Brooklyn, as Police Officer Harry Ryman Place.

Harry Ryman was born on October 15, 1936 in Brooklyn. He served eight years in the United States Navy, followed by 17 years of service with the New York City Police Department.

During his years with the NYPD, Officer Ryman received 17 medals, including the NYPD Medal of Honor. On August 14, 1980, Police Officer Ryman was off duty when he observed three individuals attempting to steal a car. After identifying himself as a police officer, he was fired upon and, although mortally wounded, Officer Ryman was able to wound one of his assailants before falling unconscious. All the perpetrators were subsequently arrested. Sadly, Officer Ryman died from his gunshot wounds.

In recognition of the ultimate sacrifice he made for his community, it is fitting that West 8th Street, between Neptune and Surf Avenues, be named Police Officer Harry Ryman Place.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
