MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES PARK AFTER JOE SABBA

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The first bill before me today is Introductory Number 738, sponsored by Council Members McCaffrey, DiBrienza and Koslowitz. This bill would re-name Veterans Memorial Park on Queens Boulevard and 48th Street in Queens as Joe Sabba Park and designate the existing veterans memorial within the park as Veterans Memorial Plaza.

Joe Sabba was born on August 28, 1916. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps as a tailgunner. In 1946, he bought a partnership in the Woodside Herald, beginning a lengthy career of community involvement. Mr. Sabba served as the chairman of the Sunnyside Flag Day Parade for over 25 years, and was the founder and chairman of the Sunnyside Drum and Bugle Corps. Unfortunately, Joe Sabba died on May 26, 1999.

Therefore, in view of his dedication to the Sunnyside and Woodside communities, it is fitting to re-name Veterans Memorial Park as Joe Sabba Park and to designate the existing veterans memorial within the park as Veterans Memorial Plaza.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
