MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES SECTION
OF A STATEN ISLAND STREET "ELLSWORTH AVENUE"

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws-

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 616, sponsored by Council Members Fiala, Abel and Stabile, would change the legal name of "Pawling Avenue," bounded by Drumgoole Road East and Hawley Avenue to "Ellsworth Avenue," in Staten Island.

At present, a street which until recently has been known as Ellsworth Avenue by local residents appears on the City Map as "Pawling Avenue." This was brought to the attention of residents of that street when signs bearing the name "Pawling Avenue" were erected in place of those bearing the name "Ellsworth Avenue". Although the name "Pawling Avenue" appears on a City Map which dates back to the mid-1960s, the street has always been thought by its residents to be named "Ellsworth Avenue."

The residents of the affected area petitioned Council Member Stephen J. Fiala and Community Board 3 in Staten Island to end the confusion and have the name "Ellsworth Avenue" restored.

Therefore, in view of the community's wishes, the legal name of "Pawling Avenue" bounded by Drumgoole Road East and Hawley Avenue, should be changed to "Ellsworth Avenue."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
