MAYOR GIULIANI AND CITY HARVEST KICK OFF SIXTH ANNUAL NEW YORK FOR KIDS FOOD DRIVE

Month-Long Campaign Aims To End Childhood Hunger

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani was joined by City Harvest Executive Director Julia Erickson today to kick off the Sixth Annual New York For Kids Food Drive, which begins this Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14th, and continues until Father's Day, Sunday, June 19th, 2000.

The Mayor encouraged New Yorkers to donate infant formula, baby food, non-perishable goods, pasta, rice and whole grain cereal, and canned vegetables at drop-off points located in all New York City Police and Fire Stations, as well as at D'Agostino Supermarkets and other locations throughout the City. This year's food drive is being sponsored by City Harvest, the New York City Police and Fire Departments, Beechnut Naturals, D'Agostino's Supermarkets, WABC-TV and 106.7 LITE FM.

"The annual New York For Kids Food Drive has been part of our City's effort to eliminate childhood hunger for the past six years," said Mayor Giuliani. "The contributions of New Yorkers to achieve this goal is part of the generous spirit that makes New York City special, and I encourage all New Yorkers to join City Harvest in this effort by donating food at their local police precinct, firehouse or D'Agostino's Supermarket.

"I would also like to thank City Harvest for its year-round commitment to helping eliminate hunger in New York City, as well as thank the many food drive sponsors for supporting this effort."

During the 1999 New York For Kids Food Drive, City Harvest delivered 200,000 pounds of donated food to food pantries, day care centers, soup kitchens and other emergency food programs.
