MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES NEW PARKS
DEPARTMENT ANTI-LITTER INITIATIVE

Mayor Giuliani-joined by Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, Home Depot New York City District Manager Mohamed Khan, and New York Times Senior Manager of Community Affairs Sharon Yakata-today announced a new Citywide anti-litter initiative to help keep City parks clean. Co-sponsored by Home Depot and the New York Times, the initiative will include a public awareness campaign, new anti-litter programming in the Department's after-school programs, and increased enforcement of anti-littering ordinances and regulations.

"Our City's Parks are an indispensable component of what makes New York City the Capital of the World," Mayor Giuliani said. "And they're a big part of the City's high quality of life-the factors that make living here so desirable, that when Americans are asked where they would most like to live or visit, they name New York more often than any other city. But to be fully enjoyed, our parks have to be clean. The Parks Department does a great job of keeping them litter free. But extra help from the public would make the parks more enjoyable for everyone. That's what this initiative will help accomplish."

Parks Commissioner Henry Stern said, "Litter is by far the biggest challenge any park manager faces in keeping a park clean. And our managers do a very good job of containing the problem, as our cleanliness ratings prove, round after round. But with this initiative, we'll better address the source of the problem. The more we can prevent trash from becoming litter, the better able Parks personnel will be to maintain the beauty of our City's Parks."

Home Depot New York City District Manager Mohammed Khan said: "Home Depot is proud to support this effort to clean up NYC parks. We believe that being a good neighbor means providing outstanding service in our stores and in our communities."
