MAYOR GIULIANI JOINS FIRE COMMISSIONER THOMAS VON ESSEN AT GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR 292 PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTERS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen at a graduation ceremony at Brooklyn College for 292 Probationary Firefighters. The new Firefighters -- or "Probys" as they are often called -- have successfully completed a rigorous 13-week training program that has prepared them for the many challenges they will face in their new careers.

"Today, 292 new firefighters join the elite ranks of New York's Bravest - the most professional and successful fire department in the world," the Mayor said. "I have no doubt that this new class of highly skilled firefighters will follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and quickly demonstrate their dedication to saving lives and protecting property. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I congratulate "Class One of 2000" - the first class of probationary firefighters to enter the Fire Academy and graduate in this new century and new millennium "

Fire Commissioner Von Essen said, "I am proud to welcome and congratulate all of our new firefighters as they embark on what I believe to be the most admirable and rewarding profession one can choose. They join a Department that is steeped in history and tradition and whose members demonstrate everyday unparalleled dedication and selflessness as a Department, as a team, and as individuals. They have proven the depth of their determination throughout the difficult but ultimately rewarding training they received over the last 13 weeks. As a firefighter myself, I know the skills they have acquired will help protect their own lives as they challenge the Department to continue doing what it has always done best - save lives and protect property."

Also included in the ceremony was the presentation of several awards for excellence, including:

In keeping with tradition, Firefighter Timothy Sullivan presented a check in the name of the graduating class to hero Fire Lieutenant Timothy Stackpole. The proceeds will be donated to the New York Firefighters Burn Center.
