MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT NAMES
STREET AFTER DR. WILLIAM A. TIECK

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The last bill before me, Introductory Number 617, sponsored by Council Members Linares, Eisland and Malave-Dilan, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Rev. Dr. William A. Tieck Way," on Marble Hill Avenue between West 228th Street and the North Side of West 230th Street, in the Bronx.

The Reverend Dr. William A. Tieck was born in Denver on June 5, 1909. After attending college in California, he came east and attended Union Theological Seminary, where he received a Master's Degree. He then attended Columbia University earning his doctorate in Theology in 1953.

Reverend Tieck became pastor of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in 1946, and remained as pastor until 1977, when he reached mandatory retirement age. Unwilling to stay retired, Reverend Tieck went on to become pastor of the Edgehill Church, where he remained as pastor until 1997.

Among his many activities, Rev. Tieck served as president of the Riverdale Community Council and actively took an interest in local history, serving as the Official Historian of Bronx County from 1989 to 1996. Unfortunately, Rev. Tieck passed away on January 13, 1997. In recognition of his more than 50 years of service to the Borough of the Bronx, it is fitting that Marble Hill Avenue, between West 228th Street and the North Side of West 230th Street, be named "Rev. Dr. William A. Tieck Way."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
