MAYOR GIULIANI WELCOMES OLYMPIC ATHLETES TO CITY HALL

First Meeting of NYC2012 Kicks Off Drive to Gain Olympic Games for New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani-joined by NYC 2012 President Daniel Doctoroff and several current and former Olympic Athletes-today hosted the formal launch of the campaign to bring the Olympic Games to New York City in 2012. NYC2012, a nonprofit corporation led by prominent New Yorkers from the fields of business, labor, fashion, entertainment, culture, and education, is spearheading the effort to secure the games for New York City.

"No event could better cap New York's remarkable resurgence than hosting the Olympic games," Mayor Giuliani said. "With a booming economy, the world's largest concentration of media, a surging Internet industry, unprecedented levels of tourism, greater diversity than any City in the world, and a sustained record as the nation's safest large city, New York is ideally suited to be an Olympic host.

"The effort to bring New York the games has brought together the widest array of New Yorkers from all five boroughs, every industry, virtually all elected officials, and community, business and labor leaders. The spirit generated in all the communities of our city by this effort is further evidence of the ongoing renaissance of New York City.

"I enthusiastically support the efforts of NYC2012, under the leadership of Dan Doctoroff, and applaud the participating corporations and civic leaders for advancing this exciting project."

Daniel Doctoroff said, "The Olympic Games offer New York and extraordinary opportunity to leave an historic legacy and to celebrate the diversity of our people. With citizens from virtually every nation on earth, New York is 'the World's Second Home' and the ideal Olympic host city."

In his State of the City speech, Mayor Giuliani announced that the City would work closely with NYC2012 to bring the Olympic to New York. Today's meeting at City Hall of the Policy and Advisory boards of NYC2012 marks the kick-off of the campaign.

New York, represented by NYC2012, is one of 8 cities competing to be the U.S. Candidate City. The other cities are Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, Tampa, and a combined Washington-Baltimore bid. The U.S. Candidate City will be chosen by the U.S. Olympic Committee in the fall of 2002. If selected, New York City would then compete to be designated as the Host City by the International Olympic Committee in 2005.
