MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF JANE HOFFMAN AS
COMMISSIONER OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the appointment of Jane Hoffman as Commissioner of the Department of Consumer Affairs. As Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Affairs since 1996, Ms. Hoffman is responsible for coordinating many of the agency's major policy and enforcement initiatives, such as the drive to eliminate the sale of tobacco to minors.

"As Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, Jane has demonstrated her deep commitment to protecting and advancing the rights of consumers," the Mayor said. "Among her notable accomplishments as a consumer advocate, Jane has worked tirelessly to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws designed to protect children. For instance, Jane spearheaded initiatives to crackdown on stores that illegally sell products to children, such as cigarettes or boxcutters. As a result of DCA's ongoing enforcement and education campaigns, compliance rates improve each year. I am confident that in her new capacity as Commissioner, Jane will work hard to protect the interests of her fellow New Yorkers."

Commissioner Hoffman said, "I am grateful to have taken part in the renaissance Mayor Giuiliani has brought about in New York City. Under his leadership, DCA has done groundbreaking work to protect the rights of our youngest consumers. I look forward to building upon our past success and continuing to serve the City in this expanded role."

As Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Hoffman oversaw DCA's expanded youth anti-tobacco campaign, which earned New York the distinction of being the first City in the nation to inspect every retail outlet for illegal sale of tobacco to minors. Ms. Hoffman also oversaw the creation of the Citywide-licensing center, which centralized the issuance of Consumer Affairs and Health Department licenses - more than 100,000 each year.

Prior to becoming Deputy Commissioner of DCA in late 1996, Ms. Hoffman served as Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Commission for the United Nations Consular Corp. and International Businesses, where she also served as President of the Sister Cities program and coordinated New York City's participation in the United Nations 50th Anniversary celebration.

Prior to joining the Giuliani Administration, Ms. Hoffman worked in journalism for several years, first as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and then as a senior producer for CNN. Ms. Hoffman worked on such popular shows as Moneyline and The World Today.

Ms. Hoffman holds a BA in communications and journalism from Northwestern University. She also studied at the London School of Economics. She is married to Michael Hoffman, an investment banker with the Blackstone Group. They have two children, Katie and Daisy.
