MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS MARCH AS
RED CROSS MONTH IN NEW YORK CITY

Empire State Building Illuminated in Red and White for Entire Month

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed March as Red Cross Month. During Red Cross Month, hotels, airports and retail stores will fly the Red Cross flag, while supporters will work to raise awareness of the organization's programs and services. Joining the Mayor at the City Hall announcement were Office of Emergency Management Director Richard Sheirer, Fire Commissioner Thomas von Essen, and Jonathan O'Herron, chairman of the Board of Trustees at the American Red Cross in Greater New York.

"The Red Cross has been helping New Yorkers for decades," Mayor Giuliani said. "Their commitment to helping people is second to none and thousands of New Yorkers benefit from their efforts each year. I am proud to proclaim March Red Cross Month in New York City."

Jonathan O'Herron said, "The Red Cross wants all families in the Greater New York area to know that we'll be there. We'll be there in the neighborhoods and in their communities every single day to help those who need us. The Red Cross is right here in your back yard, made up of volunteers who are your family, friends and neighbors. During Red Cross Month, we invite you to learn about the services offered by our organization and join us as volunteers and financial donors."

Commissioner Von Essen said, "Unfortunately every week, I see families displaced as a result of terrible fires. Some of the first soothing voices that families hear are those of the Red Cross professionals who serve our citizens twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week."

In 1999, the American Red Cross in Greater New York responded to 2,925 disaster situations; housed over 500 homeless families; trained 107,897 people in health and safety skills; and assisted 1,840 seniors in emergency response situations. In New York City, Red Cross workers are a fixture at fires and building collapses, relocating families and providing support to victims.

The American Red Cross has celebrated March as Red Cross Month since 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first presidential proclamation drawing attention to the organization's work. During Red Cross Month, hotels, airports and retail stores will fly the Red Cross flag, while supporters will work to raise awareness of the organization's programs and services. Volunteers will teach CPR and first aid and help transport New Yorkers to medical appointments. For more information about the Red Cross, visit their website at www.nyredcross.com.
