MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT EXTENDS OPERATION
AND MAINTENANCE OF BUS SHELTERS

Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws

The next bill before me is Introductory Number 716, sponsored at my request by Council Members Eisland, McCaffrey and Leffler. This bill would amend the New York City Charter by authorizing the Department of Transportation to extend the date of the franchise for the operation and maintenance of bus stop shelters to December 31, 2002.

This legislation would allow DOT immediately to improve upon the terms of the existing franchise agreement, including a significant increase in revenue to the City and additional shelters in a variety of sizes to meet actual sidewalk conditions. In addition, the terms the City is negotiating with the franchisee will allow for immediate contract termination should the Council authorize DOT to move ahead with competitive bidding for a new long-term agreement. By authorizing DOT to extend this franchise, this bill would allow the City to reap the benefits of these much-improved services.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
