MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT EXTENDS
HEALTH CARE BENEFITS FOR PAST MAYORS

Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws

The first bill before me is Introductory Number 668, sponsored by Speaker Vallone in conjunction with my Administration. This legislation would allow any former Mayor who is without health insurance coverage to receive such benefits from the City of New York when he reaches the age of sixty-two.

A Mayor may not serve in office long enough to become eligible for City health benefits. Therefore, it is possible that a former chief executive could be left without health insurance coverage in his latter years.

With four former Mayors now all over the age of sixty-two, it is appropriate that we ensure that those who served this City will never have to worry about the loss of their health care benefits.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
