Find Tax Assistance Center

Qualifying New Yorkers can visit free assistance sites that are part of the New York City Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition beginning mid-January 2010.

At free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites and AARP Tax-Aide sites, trained and certified volunteers prepare basic federal and state tax returns and help filers claim credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and New York City Child Care Tax Credit. To be eligible for free tax preparation at a VITA site, you must:

  • have children and annual income less than $50,000 OR
  • have no children and annual income less than $18,000
  • have a Social Security card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) letter for all names on the return, including dependents (original or copy)

NEW! This year, the City offers a new, free way to file your taxes. At sites with the computer icon, a certified tax specialist will help you prepare and electronically file your tax return using an online tax preparation tool. The tool and Internet access are free. Assistance is free. To be eligible for free tax preparation at a site offering the online tax preparation tool, you must:
       ▪ have annual income less than $58,000
       ▪ have a Social Security Number or ITIN
       ▪ have a valid e-mail address
       ▪ have basic computer skills
