IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Effective March 7, 2009, the $aveNYC Account will no longer be offered. Taxpayers who still need to file their returns should visit free and low-cost tax preparation sites throughout the City to claim special tax credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and New York City Child Care Tax Credit. |
As a limited-time opportunity, the $aveNYC Account was offered at select free tax preparation sites. The City of New York gave eligible tax filers 50¢ for every dollar saved from their tax refund up to $250 when they opened a $aveNYC Account. Eligible filers included families (with dependents) earning less than $45,000 and individuals earning less than $20,000.
$aveNYC Accounts offered a unique opportunity to eligible tax filers to use a portion of their refund to build savings. Tax filers had to deposit at least $100 of their refund to open the account and must keep it open for at least one year to get the match. Account holders can continue to make deposits throughout the year to watch their savings grow.
